COVID-19 Testing Q & A

When do I need COVID-19 testing?

You should get tested for COVID-19 at Raritan Family Healthcare if you:

  • Have symptoms of the COVID-19 virus
  • Were exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19
  • Traveled to a high-risk area
  • Attended a high-risk event
  • Need a negative test for travel, work, or school

Your risk of developing COVID-19 depends on many variables. For example, whether you are fully vaccinated, how long you were exposed to the virus, and your proximity to an infected person all affect your chances of getting COVID-19.

What symptoms indicate I need COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 commonly causes a long list of possible symptoms. Symptoms appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus, and then you may experience any of the following:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Dry cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Skin rash
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Discoloration of fingers and toes

Many people don't develop symptoms, or they have such mild symptoms they don't realize they have COVID-19. However, you can still pass the virus on to others whether or not you have symptoms.

When should I seek emergency treatment for COVID-19?

You should seek immediate medical care if you have:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Blue- or gray-colored skin, lips, or nail beds
  • Ongoing pain or pressure in your chest
  • The inability to stay awake or wake up
  • New onset of confusion

If you call Raritan Family Healthcare, the staff can help you log on for a telehealth meeting. Or you should call 911, depending on the severity of your symptoms.

What type of COVID-19 testing might I receive?

When you get a COVID-19 test, your provider inserts a swab (flexible stick with a soft tip) into your nose or throat. They collect secretions from inside your nose or the back of your throat.

There are several types of COVID-19 testing:

Rapid COVID-19 test

A rapid test detects proteins (antigens) that come from the surface of the virus. This test produces results in about 15 minutes, telling whether you currently have COVID-19.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test

This test detects genetic material from the virus. A PCR test also identifies an active illness, and it's more accurate than the rapid test, but it takes longer to get results.

Antibody test

This test shows you had a COVID-19 infection in the past.

If you need a COVID-19 test, you can get a same-day appointment at Raritan Family Healthcare. Call the nearest office or book an appointment online right away.
